Return to exercise slowly

In today's post, we want to talk a little about what a mother's post- birth routine might be like.

We know it's something that has to be defined, for various reasons:

  • The 9 months during which a woman undergoes obvious physical and psychological transformations;
  • Childbirth, a remarkable and unique experience in a woman's life, capable of bringing different meanings to the woman;
  • Postpartum, which we consider to be a happy time to have the baby with the mother, but at the same time challenging for many reasons, both physically and psychologically.

These are just three points that we consider central when we talk about the transformations that mothers go through and that must be addressed. Each period has its own particularities, as the pregnancy and post-pregnancy periods are defined - a unique and personal experience.

We think it's essential to emphasise this idea, because being a mother has this power to transform people, in whatever sense we're talking about. The reality is that there is a sense that mums are entirely available and attentive to their little ones, which we all agree with. However, there is no longer a side to her well-being, or at least it is reduced. In fact, her well-being is often associated with the well-being of the baby. If we look at a large part of it, it is, but not all of it. The rest, which is little talked about or at least tried not to be the centre of attention, is just as essential to talk about.

When a mum gives birth, her main concern is the baby, which is perfectly natural. Here on the blog, we've already touched on the need for mums to have some time to themselves, to be able to give importance to their wellbeing and to find ways of bringing this balance back into their daily lives.

We looked into what kind of activities are recommended, especially when it comes to the post-natal period. Throughout our research, the importance of physical exercise for a mother's health is clear. Relax, we're talking about activities that mums can do. However, each situation is different, so exercise must be seen as something that should be adapted and followed by a professional.

However, we feel that there is a growing concern about what your post-pregnancy period will be like, both physically and psychologically. Physical activity is a great option for both. It allows us to unwind and give us that moment to focus on ourselves, as well as bringing benefits for recovery and mobility.

We believe that, at first, it's a task that can be seen as impossible, because the time that mums have is used to give full attention to the baby. So if the baby is your total concern, we can include them in your physical activities. It sounds a bit impossible, but we've come up with some tips and recommendations that might be interesting.

  • It's recommended that you start physical activity from your baby's third month, when they are already mobile and able to lift their little head.
  • When performing certain exercises, you can use a harness or sling to hold your baby securely.
  • During the exercises you need to take breaks.
  • You can take advantage of playtime with your little one to do some gymnastics together.
  • Several walks in the park are a great idea. Put the baby in the pram and we're ready to go for a walk. At the end of the walk, it's a good idea to do some stretching.

So, these are some tips that we found interesting for new mums taking the next step. In doing so, we want to emphasise the idea that mothers need to take care of their well-being and have their moment. However, we know that sometimes it can be difficult, but one thing at a time.

What about you? Mums, was this kind of care important for you to feel a return to routine? What kind of activities did you do first? How do you feel? We want to know your experience. We want to know your opinion.
