See through the eyes of our little ones

See through the eyes of our little ones

When we know we're going to be parents, we spend the whole nine months curious about what our baby will look like and who he or she will most resemble. It's something that not only interests the parents (of course), but also the whole family.

This curiosity is perfectly natural. The little one will carry with them certain characteristics from their parents that will be developed as they grow up. We could be talking about physical aspects or even personality, for example.

Today we wanted to bring you a lighter topic that, in a way, attracted our interest when we did our research. We came across a topic related to a baby's eyes and their development from the first day they are in this world.

What we have discovered is that the colour of our little one's eyes is not defined the first time they open those little eyes. Some say that there is a kind of paediatric myth related to the legend of newborn eye colour.

This story says that eye colour is influenced by maternal breastfeeding. From the moment breastfeeding ends and is no longer the baby's only source of nourishment, eye colour tends to darken. This explanation is given, but it has no scientific basis. According to our research, there are small, real explanations for the slight change in the colour of babies' eyes.

  • The first relates to the fact that newborn babies have a high percentage of bluish-grey eyes.
  • The second says that the colour of a baby's eyes is strongly determined by genetics.
  • The third states that eye colour changes during the first few months of a baby's life.
  • The fourth and last is associated with the idea that it is around the age of 6 months that a baby's eyes acquire their definitive colour.

The explanation we can find, this time more scientific, is that this change in the colour of babies' eyes is due to the development of the protective melanin cells in the iris, which are immature at birth and begin to develop in the first few months of life.

Today we wanted to dedicate ourselves to this topic, which we thought was funny, and we'll share it with you here. Another interesting little aspect of the development and growth of our little ones. Looking at those little eyes and thinking that they might have eyes that are similar to their father or mother in shape and, in this case, colour.

Or they could give us that surprise that nobody was expecting. We'll just have to wait and see.

What about you? Did you know about these little changes when we talk about the colour of our little ones' eyes? Were you surprised to find out what colour your son or daughter's eyes were? How about their eyes, do they look like their mum's or dad's or are they a mixture? We want to know your experience. We want to know your opinion.
