When we talk about waste, one of the biggest sectors we can think of is the fashion industry.
Over time, this has been one of the major problems in this area. The productions, materials and principles that have been adopted have not always taken the environment and its future into consideration. It's an industry that has regressed in this respect, which has made it important to take a new direction with new principles, mostly directed towards caring for the planet and what will be its concern for the brand and industry in which it operates.
Nowadays, this problem is being worked on in order to reduce it and to have a positive impact on the environment. Brands have had to change the way they work, think about the production process and the role their garments will play in the future.
What's more, the environment that has been created around the industry - whether by the emergence of new ideas and principles, or by the people who buy the brands' products, who are increasingly aware of their choices, the composition of the garments and even how the brands think about every detail - these complements can be crucial to the development of a brand today. Not to mention, it will be beneficial for everyone's future.
In this sense, many practices have been developed and applied when we talk about the production of a garment, and even in its creative process. Design becomes essential when we create a piece that, from the outset, takes into account sustainability, the materials that will be used, how it will be produced, how we can idealise the future of that piece - whether it will accompany the child's growth or whether it will be easily disposable.
All of these aspects are important and must be considered, especially with all the news, constant innovation and development that the fashion industry receives and implements. In our case, the design created by Wedoble aims for its garments to be able to follow the child's growth and development, providing comfort and safety. In addition, with such concern for those who wear our clothes, we have in mind that they should be environmentally friendly at all levels.
We need to include the concept of sustainability in our vocabulary and make it more and more natural when we start to idealise a collection, the material used for a shirt, the packaging practices, the complements to the garments and the way a particular order is sent.
Caring for our planet has always and will always be an important indicator in our creative and productive process. Sustainability has to be felt and seen throughout the process, only then will it be worth it for our future as well as that of the planet.
Speaking of sustainability, we couldn't stop talking about the KIDS MODAPORTUGAL project. In addition to all the ideas we've already covered here on the blog, we wanted to provide some information on how we can fight this problem of waste.
As one of the brand ambassadors of this project, here we highlight the main answers we give every day to this issue:
- Reduction in the use of raw materials and choice of colours;
- Creation of repair stations;
- Use of dead stock;
- Reverse logistics;
- Revalorisation of defective products;
- Use of 3D technology, CAD and cutting machines;
- Recycling dead stock or post-consumer products;
- Revalorisation of old collections;
- Sales of second-hand products;
- Selling defective products.
These are just some of our answers to fighting waste. We believe there are many more, because there are other industries and, even in fashion, different materials may require different types of sustainability practices or, with certain production techniques, it may make more sense to choose another type of response. In this way, we need to be sustainable, but in line with our daily work, and we can have a positive impact on the environment.
Every day, we try to keep up with new practices that we can apply, so that we are a brand that uses the planet's resources, but whose principle is to return all resources to their starting point - planet Earth.
This is our way of fighting waste. We believe that if everyone does their bit, we'll have a better world or at least a more careful one for the future generations to come. What's more, we want to make the fashion industry sustainable and part of a body of work that is evolving in a positive direction for us and the planet.
We'd like to take this opportunity to leave you with more information on the KIDS MODAPORTUGAL project website - https://www.kidsmodaportugal.pt/.
What about you? Did you know any of these practices? What do you think about the changes that have taken place in terms of sustainability in the fashion industry? We want to know your opinion.
